4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Consult  a doctor in every case of suspected poisoning. Never give fluids or induce vomiting if the person is unconscious or convulsing regardless of the cause of injury. If breathing difficulties occur, get medical attention immediately.

EYES:  Hold eyes open and carefully rinse eyes with running water.  Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Get immediate medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area with soap and water.  Get medical attention.

INGESTION:  Rinse mouth.  If conscious, give a glass of water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting.
Get immediate medical advice.

INHALATION:    Move person to fresh air.  Seek medical advice if ill-effects occur.
If person is not breathing, begin artificial respiration. Use mouth-to-nose rather than mouth-to-mouth.
 

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:  Water spray, water fog, foam, CO2, dry chemical .

FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS:  Keep containers cool with water.  Expansion or decomposition on heating may lead to violent rupture of containers.
Avoid breathing fumes.

FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:  Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and personal protection clothing.
 

6.  ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

SPILLS:  Do not contaminate watercourses or the ground. Clean up immediately. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear personal protective equipment. Contain and absorb spill with sand, earth, inert material or vermiculite. Place spilled material in clean dry labeled container that can be tightly closed for disposal.
For large spills, clear area of non-essential personnel. Stay upwind. Alert Fire Brigade as to location and nature of spillage and hazard.
Always decontaminate and launder all protective clothing and equipment before drying and storing ready for re-use.

DISPOSAL:  Dispose of waste or contaminated material in labeled polyethylene, polypropylene, plastic pail or polylined drum to an approved landfill in accordance with local regulations.
 

7.  HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING: Read label before use.  Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. Keep out of reach of children.  Use personal protective equipment to prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Do not eat, drink or smoke when using product.  Wash hands before meals and after use.   Wash protective clothing daily after work.

STORAGE:   Store in tightly closed original container in a cool dry place, out of reach of children and away from food, drink and animal foodstuffs.  Check containers are labeled and free from leaks. Protect containers from physical damage.
 

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

EXPOSURE GUIDELINES:  No Tolerable Exposure Limit (TEL) nor Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) has been set for this substance.

ENGINEERING CONTROLS:  Use in a well ventilated area.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE):

Face/Eye protection:  Product is corrosive. Wear goggles or face shield.  Avoid wearing contact lenses if possible.

Skin protection:   Product is corrosive. Wear chemical protective gloves, e.g. PVC.

Respiratory protection:  Use in a well-ventilated area. In confined spaces wear a SAA approved respirator.

Other: Cotton overalls buttoned to neck and at wrist are recommended to protect clothes and any exposed skin from contamination. A waterproof apron is recommended to protect from splashes when handling concentrate.
Wear impervious safety footwear.
After use, wash protective equipment including the inside of gloves.
Dry before re-use.
Ensure easy access to eye wash unit and to emergency shower.

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

STABILITY (CONDITIONS TO AVOID):   Stable under normal storage and use conditions.
Corrosive – store in original container, tightly closed.   Use only polyethylene, polypropylene, plastic pail or polylined drum.  Do NOT use aluminium, galvanized or tin-plated containers.

INCOMPATIBILITY (MATERIALS TO AVOID) : Avoid contact with oxidizers, acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides.   Product reacts with aluminium/zinc producing flammable, explosive hydrogen gas.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS:  Decomposes on heating and may produce acrid smoke and toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides.

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION:  Not known to occur.
 

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS: This section includes possible adverse effects, which might occur if this product is not handled in the recommended manner.

Toxicity data:
The active ingredient in this product, sodium 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, is moderately toxic. Probable oral lethal dose (human) for active is between 0.5 and 5 g/kg.

EYE:  Corrosive. Contact with concentrate may result in permanent damage to eyes.

SKIN:  Corrosive. Contact with concentrate may cause burns.

INGESTION:  Corrosive effects may cause discomfort and burns to upper respiratory gastrointestinal tracts.

INHALATION:  Product is not classified as having acutely toxic effects by inhalation route.  May cause discomfort to upper respiratory tract. Corrosive.

SYSTEMIC (OTHER TARGET ORGAN) EFFECTS:  Not classified.

CANCER INFORMATION:  Not identified as having any carcinogenic effects.

TERATOLOGY (BIRTH DEFECTS) and REPRODUCTIVE DEFECTS:   Not classified.

MUTAGENICITY (EFFECTS ON GENETIC MATERIAL): Not classified.

DEGRADATION AND PERSISTENCE:  Should be readily biodegradable at concentration below toxic limits.  In weak alkaline or neutral solutions the mercaptobenzothiazole anion can readily complex with various metal ions, such as Cu+2 and Zn+2 and form insoluble salts.

ECOTOXICOLOGY:     Not classified as being ecotoxic.
 

13.  DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Dispose of any waste in accordance with Regional Authority or local council bylaws.
Dispose of rinsed containers by burying in an approved landfill.
 

14.  TRANSPORT REGULATIONS

PUBLIC PASSENGER VEHICLE TRANSPORT:
HSNO Regulations limit packages to no more than 1 L when carried on passenger service vehicles.

15.  REGULATORY INFORMATION
